FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Note: We've read reports that the update process can erase saved data. Please make sure to jot down any existing recordings prior to updating. We don't want you to lose any important information!

1. I have a Wi-Fi connection however I cannot send emails. Help!

To verify that you have a working wireless connection, open Safari on your iPhone, and navigate to http://www.apple.com or the website of your choice.

2. Yes, I have a working wireless connection. Help!

We are aware that some users are having issues sending emails to gmail.com, mac.com, and me.com. We are working hard to determine the cause of these problems.

We have received reports that with the new Apple 3G iPhone, you should still be able to send recordings by email if you turn off your phone's Wi-Fi. Whenever you have any trouble with the email feature, you should try using the 3G Network instead. Unfortunately, it is not possible to offer this feature on the original phone.

Note: In certain countries, using the 3G network can incur extra useage costs.

3. How do I rename a recording?

From the recording screen, tap the name of the file, which by default is the time and date it was created.

4. How do I delete a recording?

From the file list screen, first tap "edit", then tap the red circle next to the recording you'd like to delete. This will bring up a "delete" button for that recording.

5. Can I use a mic with AudioRecorder?

Yes! Just plug in your peripheral, and you're good to go.

6. Why does my copy of AudioRecorder load slowly? Why is it slow to type a recording's name? Why does AudioRecorder crash on startup?

Our first suggestion is to try rebooting your iPhone. You can do this by holding down the top and home buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. If rebooting your phone does not correct the problem, the cause might then be a faulty installation. We recommend deleting the app and reinstalling it. Please be aware that reinstalling Audio Recorder can cause you to lose all of your saved recordings, so make sure to jot down any important information first. For more information on software lag and sudden crashes, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1608445&tstart=45

7. How long of a recording can I send through email?

This depends on maximum mail size allowed by your email provider. Many providers limit the size of attachments to 10 MB, which roughly translates to a three-to-four minute long recording. However, we cannot guarantee that this limit holds true for all providers; we suggest that you use multiple, shorter recordings if you plan on emailing them. Of course, if you do not plan on emailing your recording, it can be as long as you like.

8. What are .caf files? How do I listen to them?

CAF files are Core Audio Files, an uncompressed audio format created by Apple to address the limitations of WAV and AIFF. CAF files can be played with QuickTime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download). For more information on CAF files, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_Audio_Format

You should be able to import a .caf file into iTunes (some users have experienced difficulty with this; we are currently working out the problem.)

9. What are .gz files? What do I do with them?

GZIP files are compressed files. In the current updated version 1.1 of Audio Recorder, recordings are now sent uncompressed instead, as .caf files. In the previous version, Mac users can uncompress a .gz file by double-clicking it, while Windows users will need to use a program such as WinZip, WinAce or WinRar. We suggest WinAce, since it is freeware.

10. Why do you use .caf and .gz? Why don't you use more common file types?

Both are natively supported on the iPhone. While it's possible to record in .wav format, .wav files load and play more slowly. We are currently working on an mp3 encoder to be included in a future patch.
